I’ve been in IT a long time. Over the years, I’ve navigated through many changes in technology, business practices and cultural norms. I’ve worked all over the world and have enjoyed building startups or fixing troubled businesses. The two jobs I love the most?
- The C-suite hates IT
- Green field startups
For the first job, there’s always a reason for dissonance between the business and IT. Sometimes it’s people, sometimes it’s communication, sometimes it’s poor management. Sometimes it's all three!
I enjoy listening to everyone’s point of view. The business knows what they want and can tell stories about what isn’t working. From their point of view, IT staff feel that they need leadership or new tools or better communication of complex topics. This is all solvable, and I thrive at turning things around so that the business gets what it deserves, and IT feels valued.
For the second job, a startup is daunting. Starting with nothing but an idea, you’re building a business. A startup isn’t for everyone. But people who’ve done it know it’s an exhilarating ride.
I build a team of people who enjoy this unique challenge and understand their domain experience. My job as a leader is to set the architectural stage and let the team enjoy building and communicating.
